Child-Parent Relationship Therapy for Special Populations

A 10-week Play Therapy Intervention

In this two-day workshop, participants will learn how to utilize Child-Parent Relationship Therapy (CPRT), a research-based, highly effective 10-week filial therapy model with parents.

Topics Include:

  • What is CPRT? Review history of CPRT/filial therapy and the research findings
  • Learn principles of Child-Centered Play Therapy as the foundation for CPRT
  • Ethics for counselors
  • Reflective responding and basic principles for play sessions
  • Parent-Child play session skills and procedures
  • Supervision format and limit setting
  • Supervision and choice giving
  • Supervision and self-esteem building responses
  • Supervision and generalization skills
  • Unique considerations in working with special populations and in different settings

Expected Outcomes:

  • Participants will learn the principles and process of using Child-Parent Relationship Therapy with parents, which requires an understanding and application of Child-Centered Play Therapy with parents.
  • Participants will learn about the history and research of play therapy and CPRT.
  • Participants will learn about the ethical considerations in using play therapy and filial therapy.
  • Participants will learn specific modifications and considerations when using CPRT with addicted parents and other special populations.

School counselors, LPCs/LCPCs, LCSWs, LMFTs, and other practitioners that work with children and parents. Also graduate students in counseling, social work, marriage and family counseling.

Presenters:

Dr. Dee Ray is Associate Professor of Counselor Education and Director of the Child and Family Resource Clinic at the University of North Texas. Dr. Ray is a Licensed Professional Counselor-Supervisor, National Certified Counselor, and Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor. Dr. Ray has 20 years of experience working with children in community and school settings and is the leading researcher in the field of play therapy. Dr. Ray has won awards such as Association for Play Therapy’s Research Award for 2008, the Texas Counseling Association’s Outstanding Research Award in 2007, and the University of North Texas ‘Fessor Graham Award for outstanding and unselfish service beyond the call of duty to students in 2007. Dr. Ray is the past editor for the International Journal of Play Therapy and has published countless articles, book chapters, and books regarding her area of expertise: Child-Centered Play Therapy.

Dr. April Schottelkorb is Assistant Professor of Counselor Education at Boise State University. Dr. Schottelkorb is a Licensed Professional Counselor, National Certified Counselor, a Certified K-12 School Counselor (Montana), and a Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor. Dr. Schottelkorb’s research agenda is examining the effectiveness of child-centered play therapy and person-centered teacher consultation. Dr. Schottelkorb is currently researching the effectiveness of child-centered play therapy with traumatized refugee children in the Boise elementary schools.

Karrie Swan, M.Ed. is Assistant Director of the Dallas Counseling Clinic at the University of North Texas-Dallas. Ms. Swan is a Licensed Professional Counselor-Intern, a former school counselor, and a former special education teacher. Ms. Swan is currently researching the effectiveness of child-centered play therapy for children with disabilities.

Student Fee: $90 (must show proof of student status at door) In order to receive the Student Fee of $90 you must call the Center at 426-3861. If Boise State credit is wanted, student must pay "for-credit" fee in addition to above student fee.

ETHICS training only Fee: $60.00 (12:15 - 1:45 on Friday and Saturday)
