Transforming Stress

Description:
Seventy-five to ninety
percent of all healthcare visits are due to stress related disorders.
Stress is associated with hypertension, central obesity, arrhythmia, angina,
high cholesterol and a host of other medical conditions. In this
workshop, Dr. Guarneri will interactively explore with participants how to
recognize stress triggers and change their response.

Bio:
Erminia "Mimi" Guarneri, MD, FACC
Board-certified in cardiology, internal medicine, nuclear medicine and
holistic medicine, Dr. Guarneri is the founder and medical director of the
Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine. Dr. Guarneri was an English
Literature major as an undergraduate at New York University. Her
medical degree is from SUNY Medical Center in New York where she graduated
number one in her class. Dr. Guarneri served her internship and
residency at Cornell Medical Center, where she later became chief medical
resident. She served cardiology fellowships at both New York
University Medical Center and Scripps Clinic. Dr. Guarneri served as
an attending in interventional cardiology at Scripps Clinic where she placed
thousand of coronary stents. Recognizing the need for a more
comprehensive and more holistic approach to cardiovascular disease she
pioneered the Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine where she uses
state-of-the-art cardiac imaging technology and lifestyle change programs to
aggressively diagnose, prevent and treat cardiovascular disease. She
is a member of the American College of Cardiology, Alpha Omega Alpha, the
American Medical Women's Association, and a diplomat of the American Board
of Holistic Medicine. Dr. Guarneri has authored several articles that
have appeared in professional journals such as the Journal of
Echocardiography and the Annals of Internal Medicine. Dr.
Guarneri participated as a member of the writing committee for the American
College of Cardiology Foundation Complementary Medicine Expert Consensus
Document. This expert consensus statement on integrating complementary
medicine into cardiovascular medicine was published in 2005. She is
the author of The Heart Speaks, a poignant collection of stories from
heart patients who have benefited from integrative medicine approaches.
The Heart Speaks and her clinical work have been featured on the
Today Show. She has been recognized for her national leadership in
integrative medicine by the Bravewell Collaborative.

This workshop will include an overview of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)
- its terminologies, history, philosophy, diagnostics and treatment
principles and licensing in Idaho. Needling techniques will be
demonstrated on a video and audience questions will be answered.

medicine by recognizing its strengths and weaknesses
Bio:
David McElwain, L.Ac. graduated in 1995 from Emperor's College in Santa
Monica, California with a master's degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine.
He has 20 years experience in various forms of massage and has worked in
chronic pain clinics and physical therapy settings. David has been in
private practice in Boise for 11 years, where he employs Chinese herbs.
He also has been the past president of the Idaho Acupuncture Association,
serving several terms.
Music Therapy Makes a Difference in Health Care
Natalie Pasero, MT-BC
Description:
Music is a universal language that affects
the way we think and feel. however, music therapy is more than just
listening to a compact disc. A music therapist can utilize music to
make people feel more relaxed or energized, lessen feelings of anxiety and
depression, manage pain and discomfort without medication, and induce better
sleep! Participants will learn how music affects the physiological and
biological responses in our bodies. Participants will also experience
music for relaxation and gain knowledge to choose personalized music each
day to improve their health and well-being.

Bio:
Natalie Pasero, MT-BC received her Bachelor
of Arts in Music Therapy at the Conservatory of Music through the University
of Missouri-Kansas City. She became a board certified music therapist
in 2005, where she began her career at Children's Mercy hospital.
After moving to Boise, she started a private practice working with disabled
children through Health and Welfare. Natalie also works part-time at
St. Luke's Regional Medical Center with adult and pediatric cancer patients
and mothers-to-be on the antepartum unit.
Shamanism: The Missing Piece
Darlene Phillips, M.Ed.
Description:
This workshop provides a wonderful overview of Shamanism, it's history in
indigenous cultures and emergence as an alternative healing approach in
contemporary healing practices. Learn basic descriptions of some
typical Shamanic practices and purposes. Included in this session will
be an experimental component allowing participants to gain first hand
knowledge of how Shamanism can be used for everyday healing.

techniques now widely used in contemporary healing practices

Bio:
Darlene Phillips, M.Ed., received her undergraduate degree in art from Boise
State University in 1989. In 1993 she received her graduate degree in
counseling from the College of Idaho in Caldwell. After working in a
social service agency and for Family Court Services in Idaho, she began a
private practice. She has been providing counseling and psychotherapy
for over fifteen years. During the past two decades, she has been
practicing and studying Shamanism with teachers and healers from around the
world. Darlene teaches Shamanic Journeying and uses Shamanism as a
basis for teaching and well-being in counseling, relationship work and other
modalities as requested.

As part of the conference, we are inviting organizations,
companies, clinics and individuals to exhibit information and services as
part of the conference. The selling of services and products are welcomed,
except for perishable items. Please clearly post prices.
Exhibitors will be allowed one six-foot table. Sharing table
space is not permissible. Electrical outlets will be provided on a space
available basis. The cost to exhibit is $100 for a 10x10 space. You will
receive one free conference registration for being an exhibitor.

Confirmation/Cancellation Policy:
Registrants will
receive an e-mail confirmation letter approximately one week prior to the
start of the program. The confirmation letter will include information
regarding parking, room locations, etc. If cancellations are made
prior to the start of the program, participants will receive a refund, less
a $20 processing fee. If you do not cancel, you will forfeit the
registration fee.

second floor of the Boise State University Student Union Building.

This continuing nursing education activity was approved by the Idaho Nurses
Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing
Center Commission on Accreditation. No additional charge for Nursing
