On May 3 and 4, 2007, Boise State University, in cooperation with St. Luke’s Regional Medical Center and Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center, are offering a conference addressing wellness and holistic health issues for care givers and healthcare professionals.

Pre-Conference Workshop:
Thursday, May 3, 7:00pm-8:30pm

Transforming Stress
Erminia "Mimi" Guarneri, MD, FACC

Description: Seventy-five to ninety percent of all healthcare visits are due to stress related disorders.  Stress is associated with hypertension, central obesity, arrhythmia, angina, high cholesterol and a host of other medical conditions.  In this workshop, Dr. Guarneri will interactively explore with participants how to recognize stress triggers and change their response.

Participants will be able to:

  • Learn how to transform bad stress to good

  • Understand the role of emotions in health and illness

  • Learn techniques to decrease the stress response

Bio:  Erminia "Mimi" Guarneri, MD, FACC Board-certified in cardiology, internal medicine, nuclear medicine and holistic medicine, Dr. Guarneri is the founder and medical director of the Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine.  Dr. Guarneri was an English Literature major as an undergraduate at New York University.  Her medical degree is from SUNY Medical Center in New York where she graduated number one in her class.  Dr. Guarneri served her internship and residency at Cornell Medical Center, where she later became chief medical resident.  She served cardiology fellowships at both New York University Medical Center and Scripps Clinic.  Dr. Guarneri served as an attending in interventional cardiology at Scripps Clinic where she placed thousand of coronary stents.  Recognizing the need for a more comprehensive and more holistic approach to cardiovascular disease she pioneered the Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine where she uses state-of-the-art cardiac imaging technology and lifestyle change programs to aggressively diagnose, prevent and treat cardiovascular disease.  She is a member of the American College of Cardiology, Alpha Omega Alpha, the American Medical Women's Association, and a diplomat of the American Board of Holistic Medicine.  Dr. Guarneri has authored several articles that have appeared in professional journals such as the Journal of Echocardiography and the Annals of Internal Medicine. Dr. Guarneri participated as a member of the writing committee for the American College of Cardiology Foundation Complementary Medicine Expert Consensus Document.  This expert consensus statement on integrating complementary medicine into cardiovascular medicine was published in 2005.  She is the author of The Heart Speaks, a poignant collection of stories from heart patients who have benefited from integrative medicine approaches.  The Heart Speaks and her clinical work have been featured on the Today Show.  She has been recognized for her national leadership in integrative medicine by the Bravewell Collaborative.

Description: Join Dr. Guarneri in an exploration of the whole heart.  This includes the mental heart, affected by hostility, stress and depression; the emotional heart, able to be crushed by loss; the intelligent heart, with a nervous system all its own; the spiritual heart, which yearns for a higher purpose; and the universal heart, which communicates with others.

Participants will be able to:

  • Understand risk factors for cardiovascular disease

  • Understand the role of emotions in health and illness

  • Understand the role of nutritional supplements and nutraceuticals in cardiovascular disease

  • Cardiovascular disease risk in women:  Understanding treatment, nutrition and the emotions

Breakout Sessions:
Acupuncture and Pain Management
David McElwain, L.Ac.

Description: This workshop will include an overview of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) - its terminologies, history, philosophy, diagnostics and treatment principles and licensing in Idaho.  Needling techniques will be demonstrated on a video and audience questions will be answered.

Participants will be able to:

  • Learn basic philosophies of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

  • Identify appropriate conditions that can be treated by TCM

  • Demystify eastern medicine by recognizing its strengths and weaknesses

Bio: David McElwain, L.Ac. graduated in 1995 from Emperor's College in Santa Monica, California with a master's degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine.  He has 20 years experience in various forms of massage and has worked in chronic pain clinics and physical therapy settings.  David has been in private practice in Boise for 11 years, where he employs Chinese herbs.  He also has been the past president of the Idaho Acupuncture Association, serving several terms.

Music Therapy Makes a Difference in Health Care
Natalie Pasero, MT-BC

Description: Music is a universal language that affects the way we think and feel.  however, music therapy is more than just listening to a compact disc.  A music therapist can utilize music to make people feel more relaxed or energized, lessen feelings of anxiety and depression, manage pain and discomfort without medication, and induce better sleep!  Participants will learn how music affects the physiological and biological responses in our bodies.  Participants will also experience music for relaxation and gain knowledge to choose personalized music each day to improve their health and well-being.

Participants will be able to:

  • Define music therapy

  • Understand the benefits/uses of music therapy in health care

  • Use music therapy in their personal lives

  • Refer music therapy to their patients

Bio: Natalie Pasero, MT-BC received her Bachelor of Arts in Music Therapy at the Conservatory of Music through the University of Missouri-Kansas City.  She became a board certified music therapist in 2005, where she began her career at Children's Mercy hospital.  After moving to Boise, she started a private practice working with disabled children through Health and Welfare.  Natalie also works part-time at St. Luke's Regional Medical Center with adult and pediatric cancer patients and mothers-to-be on the antepartum unit

Shamanism:  The Missing Piece
Darlene Phillips, M.Ed.

Description: This workshop provides a wonderful overview of Shamanism, it's history in indigenous cultures and emergence as an alternative healing approach in contemporary healing practices.  Learn basic descriptions of some typical Shamanic practices and purposes.  Included in this session will be an experimental component allowing participants to gain first hand knowledge of how Shamanism can be used for everyday healing.

Participants will be able to:

  • State one condition which primarily accounts for the origin and the re-emergence of Shamanism

  • List three Shamanic techniques now widely used in contemporary healing practices

  • Describe how the issue of personal power differs in Shamanism from Western Medicine

  • What is OSC and SSC and what makes them differnt

Bio: Darlene Phillips, M.Ed., received her undergraduate degree in art from Boise State University in 1989.  In 1993 she received her graduate degree in counseling from the College of Idaho in Caldwell.  After working in a social service agency and for Family Court Services in Idaho, she began a private practice.  She has been providing counseling and psychotherapy for over fifteen years.  During the past two decades, she has been practicing and studying Shamanism with teachers and healers from around the world.  Darlene teaches Shamanic Journeying and uses Shamanism as a basis for teaching and well-being in counseling, relationship work and other modalities as requested.

Bio-identical Hormones
Suzanne Rice, MD

Description: Discover and develop your understanding of Bio-identical Hormone Therapy!  This workshop covers treatment options for perimenopausal and menopausal symptoms with an emphasis on bio-identical hormones.

Participants will be able to:

  • Discuss treatment options for perimenopausal and menopausal symptoms

  • Understand the role of Bio-identical Hormone Therapy

Bio: Suzanne Rice, MD, is a board certified OB/Gyn practicing at Women's Health Associates in downtown Boise.  She is a dynamic speaker with a plethora of women's healthcare knowledge.  Her energy is manifested as an Aerobic Instructor and she currently teaches classes at Gold's Gym.  Other interests include personal fitness, downhill skiing, water skiing and hiking

Workshop:
All of the above sessions will be repeated in the afternoon with the exception of Bio-identical Hormones.  Dr. Suzanne Rice will present Today's Woman.

Today's Woman
Suzanne Rice, MD

Description: Learn about today's woman from the early teen years and beyond.  This Presentation covers everything from PMS to exercise in pregnancy, perimenopause to menopause, osteoporosis and other health concerns.

Participants will be able to:

  • Define the health concerns for women from the early teen years and beyond

  • Discuss perimenopause and menopause, along with the symptoms that accompany this period of a woman's life

  • Understand the guidelines for recommended health screening the various ages

Exhibitor Information:
As part of the conference, we are inviting organizations, companies, clinics and individuals to exhibit information and services as part of the conference. The selling of services and products are welcomed, except for perishable items. Please clearly post prices.

Exhibitors will be allowed one six-foot table. Sharing table space is not permissible. Electrical outlets will be provided on a space available basis. The cost to exhibit is $100 for a 10x10 space. You will receive one free conference registration for being an exhibitor.

Confirmation/Cancellation Policy:
Registrants will receive an e-mail confirmation letter approximately one week prior to the start of the program.  The confirmation letter will include information regarding parking, room locations, etc.  If cancellations are made prior to the start of the program, participants will receive a refund, less a $20  processing fee. If you do not cancel, you will forfeit the registration fee.

 

Event Location and Parking:
All Celebrate Wellness Conference events are held on the second floor of the Boise State University Student Union Building. Free parking is reserved for conference participants in the Student Union Visitors Lot.

Continuing Education Credits (CEU's):
This continuing nursing education activity was approved by the Idaho Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center Commission on Accreditation.  No additional charge for Nursing CEUs.

Boise State University CEUs will also be available to individual participants for an additional $15.00.
