GIS Courses
The Geospatial
Research Facility at Boise State University offers a variety of GIS Courses
from beginning to intermediate. All classes are located in the
Math/Geosciences Building on the Boise State Campus, in Room 135, 9 am-5 pm
on the dates listed below. Cost
is $585 ($805 for Introduction to ArcObjects), including the book and hassle-free parking! Click on the individual course title for

All courses are ESRI authorized. By
completing four of the nine certificate courses, students will receive a
Professional Development GRF Certificate of Completion.

Introduction to ArcView
This two-day course
provides a conceptual overview and hands-on experience using ArcView GIS 3.x
software. It teaches basic ArcView GIS functionality and enables
participants to quickly take advantage of the software's powerful display
and analysis capabilities. Attendees are introduced to the ArcView GIS
GUI and use ArcView GIS to create, edit, display, query, and analyze
geographic and tabular data and create presentation quality maps and charts.
Introduction to Avenue
Course provides the
skills and knowledge needed to use the OOP language, Avenue, to customize
the ArcView GIS 3.x GUI. The course employs a task-oriented approach
that gives participants the tools they need to become proficient users.
Class attendees learn how to use the Customize dialog box and Avenue scripts
to create a new customized interface. They write their own scripts to
perform different tasks in all areas of GIS implementation.
Participants also will create, display, and query information and print
hardcopy maps.
Introduction to ArcGIS I
Apply the basics of
ArcGIS and build the foundation for becoming a successful ArcView, ArcEditor,
or ArcInfo user. Learn how to use ArcMap, ArcCatalog, and ArcToolbox and
explore how these applications work in combination to provide a complete GIS
software solution. Practice application of fundamental GIS concepts as well
as tools to create, edit, and georeference spatial data. Learn how to
manipulate tabular data, query a GIS database, and present data clearly and
efficiently using maps and charts.
Introduction to
Spatial Analysis
Focus on the principles of basic spatial analysis. You will be
introduced to basic analysis concepts that are building blocks for more
advanced spatial analysis. The analysis tasks covered in this course
include mapping where things are, mapping change, finding what's nearby,
finding what's inside, mapping quantitative data and mapping density.
Prerequisite:
Introduction to ArcGIS I or experience in ArcGIS Software.
Designing
Maps
This course is an introduction to the basic guidelines for map design.
The topics to be covered include planning a map layout, selecting export
options, text in map design, color schemes, customizing map layout elements
and customizing point, line and area symbols.
Prerequisite:
Introduction to ArcGIS I or experience in ArcGIS.
Introduction to Model Builder
This two-day course is
an introduction to the ModelBuilder application in ArcGIS. This
application is used to create, edit and manage models. Models are used
to automate your workflow or execute a set of tasks multiple times.
The course is an introduction to the concepts and terms used in ModelBuilder
and will give you hands on experience in developing simple models.
Prerequisite:
Introduction to ArcGIS I or experience in ArcGIS software.
Introduction to Geospatial Databases
This course is an introduction to geodatabase concepts in ArcGIS. The course covers migrating existing
data into a geodatabase, adding behaviors to features, creating
relationships between objects and creating and editing features in a geodatabase.
GIS Internet
This two-day course is
an introduction to
Internet Map Server (IMS). The course will introduce the participant to
Internet map authoring, web site design and publishing using the ArcIMS
Manger.
Introduction to ArcObjects
An introduction to
customizing ArcGIS™ using ArcObjects™. This course will cover building
custom applications, introduction to basic coding, and creating
subroutines and functions using VBA. The introduction to ArcObjects™ will
include programming with interfaces, navigating object model diagrams, and
using ArcObjects™ in ArcGIS™ applications.
