Basic 40 Mediation Certification

This course is approved by the Idaho Mediation Association to fulfill the basic mediation training requirements

The 40-hour basic mediation workshop includes all topics essential for beginning mediators. The course includes case examples and hands-on practice in mediating organizational and employee disputes. Course is intended for individuals preparing for State Certification, serving as internal resources to their organization, or desiring to enhance their overall skills as conflict managers and mediators.

Day One:

  • Training overview
  • Dispute resolution processes
  • Sample mediation
  • Mediation phases
  • Role of the mediator
  • Which cases are suited to mediation? Which are not?
  • Screening of cases prior to referral to the mediator
  • Building mediator credibility
  • The mediator's monologue
  • Listening tools for mediators
  • Listening practice

Day Two:

  • Mediator monologue practice
  • Storytelling and issue identification phase
  • Skills for storytelling
  • Mini-mediation practice
  • Skills for issue identification and notetaking
  • Mini-mediation practice
  • Skills to probe for hidden issues
  • Power balancing

Day Three:

  • Uses of the caucus
  • Co-mediation
  • Setting the agenda
  • Mediation case practice
  • Starting the negotiation and problem solving phase
  • Tactics to spur creativity
  • Coaching vs. intruding into the parties' decisions
  • Mediation case practice

Day Four:

  • Briefing on state laws applicable to mediators and mediator ethics
  • Mediation case practice
  • Getting the "soft" agreement
  • Moving from the "soft" agreement to writing the settlement agreement
  • Measurability, concreteness, and specificity
  • Mediation case practice

Day Five:

  • Mediation case practice
  • Closing the mediation

  • Individual assessment of strengths and weaknesses as a mediator
